7:00 p.m. The Seven Last Words of Christ
The Seven Last Words of Christ
Music and Meditation on the Words of Jesus on the Cross
7:00 p.m. Good Friday, Church of St. Mary
Allow spoken meditations and sublime music to inspire your own reflections upon Jesus in your life.
In 1786, Franz Joseph Haydn wrote an orchestral work called “The Seven Last Words of Christ.” It is a series of musical reflections on Jesus’ words (“I thirst,” “It is finished”). Haydn quickly produced a version for a string quartet, and around 1795, he completely remodeled the work as a full-scale oratorio.
The string quartet version is the one we will hear this evening. Each musical meditation will be preceded by a brief spoken reflection on the words themselves.
